Here tests are carried out to examine the properties of different materials, for instance to find out if a particular material will not crack or bend, whether it is heat resistant, tension proof, porous or proof against cold.

Using professional testing equipment (ultrasound scanner, microscope for metals, durometer) students can develop a feeling for materials used in industrial processes so that they are able to to make their own decisions about the suitability of a material for a particular purpose.
